Haven of Hope Christian Service (HOHCS) x Chui Tak-yi Exhibition

The one-of-a-kind collaboration

In the face of challenges and an increasingly complex world, “hope” remains a powerful catalyst for growth, health, and prosperity. Thanks to the generous support of Dr Chui Tak-yi to this charity exhibition, we (HOHCS) are able tocelebrate the art of hope and the boundless potential it holds for a brighter tomorrow. Through creating this shared journey of visualising hope, we aim to inspire visitors and supporters to stay courageous with their beliefs and remain positive for what the future holds.

Visions of Hope

“Hope is not a place you can find, but a way of being; not a grand destination, but a state discovered in the quiet moments along the way. It is the choice to fully bloom in desolation.” Through three series of works, Chui visualizes this journey of hope. The “Nowhere” series uses abstract, tranquil, and peaceful landscapes to allow viewers unrestrained imagination and a sense of wonder at the masterful creations of nature. The “Moments” series captures frozen motion—waves, streams, and raindrops— inviting viewers to contemplate the mystery of time. The “Being” series showcases proudly blooming flowers and lush plants to illustrate the importance of living in the present, allowing viewers to realize that no matter where they are, they can breathe with ease and display their unique beauty.

Artist’s Biography

Chui, born in Hong Kong, became a doctor after completing his medical education in 1981. He later moved into hospital management and served as the Under Secretary for Food and Health for the Hong Kong SAR Government from 2017 to 2022. He is currently an executive at a private healthcare institution. His first exposure to colour as a young boy came from the dazzling fabric swatches in his father’s shop. Later, his older brother’s explanations of textile dyeing concepts, particularly the idea that “there is no true black,” intrigued him with the mysterious nature of colour and cultivated his interest in art. In 2013, Chui’s passion for art was rekindled when he began studying painting under Chui Tsz Hung, a student of the “New Ink Movement” pioneer Lui Shou Kwan. Inspired by his teacher’s creativity and free spirit, Chui quickly developed a unique abstract style that carries a dialogue between Eastern and Western traditions and a balanced interplay between reality and imagination. Chui’s early works were minimal and monochromatic, but they later evolved into pieces rich with colour and texture. He works on traditional Chinese paper, mixing ink, acrylic, pastel, and even Chinese tea. He boldly applies colours, enjoying their unrestrained and vibrant flow. He also uses unconventional tools beyond the paint brush, such as scrapers, syringes, and needles. While using these seemingly cold instruments to create a unique visual language, he found a subtle connection between these tools of art and his decades-long medical career.

Chui’s paintings are not just for visual appreciation; they are meant to be felt. Through layered lines of colour, varied textures, and a blend of dynamic and static elements, he presents his subjective impressions of landscapes, nature, or strokes of Chinese characters. His works have been exhibited multiple times in Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland, including appearing at Christie’s auctions in Hong Kong for three consecutive years from 2021 to 2023 where his works were acquired by private collectors.
